Why are groin guards important in training?

How do shin guards for Muay Thai and kickboxing differ from MMA shin guards?
Muay Thai and kickboxing shin guards are heavier and provide full shin and instep protection. MMA shin guards are lighter and often less bulky, allowing for grappling as well as striking.
