In Judo, the word ‘gi’ refers to the traditional training uniform. It’s a heavy-duty cotton jacket, trousers, and belt, designed to withstand gripping, throwing, and grappling.
How much will a Judo gi shrink?
Most Judo gis shrink between 3–5% after the first few washes. To minimise shrinkage, wash in cold water and air-dry instead of using a tumble dryer.
Can I use a BJJ GI for Judo?
It’s not recommended. BJJ gis are lighter, with a tighter fit and shorter sleeves, while Judo gis are heavier and looser for grip fighting. Using the wrong gi may not be competition-legal.
How to remove blood from judo gi?
Treat stains as soon as possible. Rinse in cold water, apply a gentle stain remover or diluted hydrogen peroxide, then wash normally. Avoid hot water, as it sets the stain.
Is no gi Judo a thing?
Traditional Judo is practised in the gi. However, some schools incorporate No-Gi training to develop body grips and transitions useful for MMA and wrestling.
