Frequently Asked Questions
Does gi color matter in BJJ?
For most gyms, gi colour is a matter of personal choice—commonly white, blue, or black. However, some academies have uniform policies, and competitions (like IBJJF events) usually only allow white, blue, or black gis for fairness and consistency.
What size BJJ gi do I need?
BJJ gis use a letter-and-number system - A0, A1, A2, A3 for men, F1-F4 for women, and M/K sizes for kids - based mainly on your height and weight rather than a normal clothing size. Always start from the size chart for the specific brand, as fits vary: some run slim (for example Venum and Scramble), while pre-shrunk gis (such as Progress and Tatami) only shrink a little. Bear in mind 100% cotton gis can shrink up to a full size in a hot wash, so if you're between sizes it's often safe to size down and wash warm, or size up and air-dry. Each product page links its size chart - if you're on the borderline, message us and we'll help.
What is the lifespan of a BJJ Gi?
A well-made BJJ gi typically lasts 1 to 3 years with regular use. Lifespan depends on the quality of materials, how often you train, and how well you care for it—washing properly and air drying helps extend its life.
Should I wash my new BJJ Gi?
Yes, you should wash your gi before its first use. This removes any factory residue and helps soften the fabric. Most cotton gis will shrink slightly after the first wash, so washing early also helps with fit adjustment.
How much should a BJJ Gi cost?
BJJ gis range from £40 to over £150. Beginners can start with a basic gi around £50–£70. Higher-end gis offer better materials, fit, and durability—ideal for frequent training or competition use.
How to know if bjj gi is too big?
If your gi has long, floppy sleeves past the wrists, baggy pants past the ankles, or an overly loose jacket, it may be too big. A proper gi should fit snugly but allow full range of motion. IBJJF rules also specify fit requirements for competition.
Do gi colors mean anything in BJJ?
Not officially. Unlike belts, gi colours don't represent rank. Some gyms assign colours for internal use, but in most cases, it’s down to preference or uniform policy. Only white, blue, and black are allowed in IBJJF competition.
How many gi should I own?
If you train twice a week, one gi may be enough. For 3 or more sessions weekly, it’s best to have at least two gis so you always have a clean one ready and reduce wear on each.
Do you buy your own gi for BJJ?
Yes, most students purchase their own gi—though some gyms may include one in a starter pack. Make sure the gi fits your academy’s guidelines and is suitable for the type of training you’re doing.
Can I tumble dry my BJJ GI?
It’s not recommended. Tumble drying can shrink and weaken the fabric over time. Air drying is best to maintain shape, durability, and longevity—especially for pearl or gold weave gis.
Should you iron your BJJ GI?
It’s not necessary to iron your gi, and high heat can damage embroidery or patches. If you do iron, use a low setting and avoid going over printed or stitched logos.
