Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between BJJ and No-Gi grappling?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with a gi uses grips on the jacket and trousers for submissions and control. No-Gi removes the uniform, focusing on speed, underhooks, and body grips, making it closer to wrestling and MMA grappling.

Do I need a gi to start BJJ training?

Most gyms offer both gi and No-Gi classes. Beginners often start with a gi, but many also train No-Gi depending on preference and goals.

How does wrestling fit into combat sports training?

Wrestling builds explosive takedowns, balance, and control on the ground. It’s a key discipline for MMA and complements BJJ by improving top control and transitions.

What type of gloves are used in boxing vs MMA?

Boxing uses larger padded gloves (10–16oz) for striking, while MMA gloves are smaller (4–6oz) with open fingers to allow grappling.

What makes Muay Thai different from kickboxing?

Kickboxing uses punches and kicks, while Muay Thai also includes elbows, knees, and clinch work. Muay Thai is often called the ‘art of eight limbs’ for this reason.

Can I cross-train in more than one sport?

Yes, many athletes mix sports — for example, BJJ with wrestling, or boxing with Muay Thai. Cross-training improves all-round skills and is common in MMA preparation.

Which sport is best for beginners?

It depends on your goals. Boxing and kickboxing are great for fitness and striking. BJJ and wrestling are excellent for grappling. MMA combines them all, but starting with one discipline builds a strong foundation.
